Patient Guide

What to know

Welcome to Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy at Revive Rehab in Abbotsford, British Columbia. The pelvic floor is a critical group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues that stretch like a supportive hammock across the base of the pelvis. These muscles play a vital role in core stability, supporting pelvic organs (the bladder, bowel, and uterus), controlling urinary and bowel function, and facilitating sexual health. When these muscles become too weak, too tight, or uncoordinated, it can lead to pain, leakage, or functional dysfunction.

At Revive Rehab, we offer a dedicated, compassionate, and highly professional approach to pelvic floor rehabilitation. Our registered pelvic health physiotherapists possess specialized clinical training to assess and treat dysfunction in both women and men. We understand that pelvic health issues can be sensitive and deeply personal. That is why all assessments and treatments are conducted in quiet, fully private treatment suites, ensuring your absolute comfort, privacy, and safety.

Conditions We Assess and Treat

Pelvic floor dysfunction can manifest in various ways, and our targeted rehabilitation pathways address many common concerns:

Urinary Incontinence & Bladder Urgency Leaking urine when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or exercise (stress incontinence) or experiencing a sudden, overwhelming urge to urinate (urge incontinence) are highly common but treatable conditions. We teach you how to coordinate, strengthen, or relax your pelvic floor muscles to restore full bladder control.

Pregnancy & Postpartum Recovery Pregnancy and childbirth place immense structural strain on the pelvic floor and abdominal wall. Our therapists guide you through prenatal preparation to prevent tearing and postpartum recovery to address diastasis recti (abdominal separation), pelvic organ prolapse, and safe return-to-exercise planning.

Chronic Pelvic Pain & Dyspareunia Conditions like hypertonic pelvic floor (muscles that are too tight or unable to relax) can cause chronic pelvic pain, painful intercourse (dyspareunia), or pain around the pubic bone and tailbone. Through gentle internal manual therapy, myofascial release, and diaphragmatic breathing, we help down-regulate the nervous system and restore normal muscle tone.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your initial appointment begins with a detailed, confidential conversation about your medical history, symptoms, bladder/bowel habits, and recovery goals. If you consent, your therapist will perform a physical examination. This may include an external assessment of your spine, hips, and core, as well as an internal assessment (vaginal or rectal) to directly evaluate the strength, endurance, tone, and coordination of your pelvic floor muscles.

Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will explain their findings and design a customized recovery plan, which may include home exercises, biofeedback, manual therapy, and behavioral education.
