IV Education Resource
Read an overview of the medical contraindications, physical conditions, and safety limits that exclude individuals from IV therapy.
While Intravenous (IV) Therapy is a safe option for many, there are specific physical conditions and medical diagnoses where it is not safe. Direct fluid administration can strain certain organ systems if they are already compromised.
Understanding these contraindications is a key part of our clinical protocols. At Revive Rehab, we perform a mandatory screening to identify any health factors that make IV therapy unsafe for your system.
Intravenous procedures require baseline physiological screening to protect your renal and cardiovascular systems. Every treatment begins with a mandatory clinical evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional.
An IV drip delivers fluids directly into your bloodstream, increasing your total blood volume. For individuals with a healthy heart, this is easily processed. However, if you have congestive heart failure, your heart muscle cannot pump fluid efficiently.
Adding extra volume can cause fluid to accumulate in your lungs (pulmonary edema) or limbs, leading to shortness of breath and cardiovascular strain. Uncontrolled high blood pressure is also a contraindication, as fluid loading can raise blood pressure further.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering your blood and removing excess fluids and minerals. If you have chronic kidney disease or renal failure, your kidneys cannot process the fluid and high-concentration minerals (like potassium or magnesium) delivered by an IV.
This can lead to dangerous mineral imbalances and fluid overload. Therefore, we do not administer wellness IV infusions to patients with compromised renal function.
Other contraindications include G6PD deficiency, a genetic enzyme condition where high-dose Vitamin C can cause red blood cells to rupture. Active fluid retention (edema) or a history of blood clots in the targeted limb also make treatment unsafe.
Our clinical screening is designed to identify these factors early to ensure we never compromise your physical safety.
Clinical screening is mandatory before your first infusion. Book your initial consultation online for our Surrey (Chimney Hill) or Langley (Willoughby) clinics.
Please bring any recent blood panel results or prescriptions to your initial session.
