Explore the biological and mechanical phases of a physiotherapy recovery timeline, from acute inflammation to functional conditioning.
A physiotherapy recovery timeline is determined by biological tissue healing phases and movement conditioning goals. The timeline begins with the acute protection and swelling phase (days 1 to 7), focusing on pain relief and gentle movement. Next is the sub-acute repair and remodeling phase (weeks 2 to 6), where we restore joint range of motion and start early strength work. Finally, the functional conditioning phase (weeks 6 to 12+) focuses on progressive loading, sport-specific drills, and building tissue stamina to prevent re-injury.
Understanding recovery timelines sets realistic expectations for your rehabilitation. It helps you recognize the importance of progressive loading, explaining why recovery continues even after initial pain has resolved.
Tissues heal in predictable biological phases. The initial acute phase focuses on managing inflammation and protecting the joint, avoiding aggressive loading to let fibers start binding.
During the sub-acute phase, the body deposits new collagen fibers, which are weak and disorganized. Guided movement and manual therapy are key in this stage to help align these fibers, promoting flexible, strong scar tissue.
The final remodeling phase takes several months. This is where we focus on building strength, coordination, and tissue stamina through progressive exercise resistance.
Rebuilding muscle volume and tendon durability requires consistent physical load. Continuing your exercises in this phase is essential to prepare your joints for sports, work, and daily demands.
Myth:
Your recovery is complete as soon as you no longer feel daily pain.
Clinical Fact:
Pain often resolves before tissues have fully rebuilt their strength and stability. Stopping therapy early increases the risk of re-injury.
Your therapist will help outline a custom recovery timeline during your assessment, adjusting it based on how your body adapts to treatment.
