MSP Supplementary Benefits

MSP supplementary benefits for rehabilitation care

British Columbia's Medical Services Plan may offer supplementary benefits that help eligible residents access a limited number of physiotherapy, chiropractic and other approved visits each year. Here is what Revive Rehab patients should know.

What MSP supplementary benefits may cover

MSP is BC's universal health-care plan. It covers medically necessary physician and hospital services for all enrolled BC residents. In addition, MSP offers supplementary benefits that may help eligible individuals access a limited number of visits for specific health-care services each calendar year.

Services that have historically been included in MSP supplementary benefits include physiotherapy, chiropractic care and certain other approved provider types. The exact services, the number of funded visits and the eligibility criteria are set by the BC government and may change from year to year.

Revive Rehab does not publish specific MSP coverage amounts or visit limits because these details are subject to change. We encourage you to confirm your eligibility and current benefits directly with Health Insurance BC before booking.

Who may qualify?

MSP supplementary benefits are not available to all BC residents. Eligibility has historically been linked to factors such as:

  • Receiving MSP premium assistance based on income
  • Being a BC resident enrolled in MSP
  • Meeting specific age or income criteria set by the BC government
  • Having a valid physician referral for the service being accessed

Because eligibility criteria change, always check with Health Insurance BC or your physician to confirm whether you currently qualify for supplementary benefits.

How MSP differs from other programs

Understanding the difference between funding sources helps you choose the right pathway for your care.

Referral requirements and billing

To access MSP-funded physiotherapy, you typically need a referral from a physician. Ask your family doctor or walk-in clinic physician to write a referral to Revive Rehab before your first appointment.

When MSP supplementary benefits apply and the required referral is in place, Revive Rehab submits the claim to MSP on your behalf. For visits that fall outside your MSP benefit — either because you have reached your annual limit or the service is not covered — you can use your extended health plan or pay privately.

What to confirm before booking

Before your first visit, we recommend confirming the following:

Confirm your MSP supplementary benefit eligibility with Health Insurance BC
Check which services are currently covered under your benefit
Confirm how many funded visits remain in the current calendar year
Obtain a physician referral for physiotherapy or the applicable service
Bring your BC Services Card (CareCard) and photo ID to your appointment
Prepare questions about your condition and treatment expectations

Seniors and eligible residents

Seniors in British Columbia may have access to MSP supplementary benefits, particularly if they receive premium assistance or meet specific income criteria. If you are a senior managing pain, stiffness, balance concerns or mobility changes, MSP supplementary benefits may help reduce the cost of physiotherapy visits.

Revive Rehab clinics are welcoming, accessible and experienced with geriatric physiotherapy. If you are unsure whether you qualify, contact Health Insurance BC or ask your physician to check your eligibility.
